My First ever quilt

Today I am going to share with you my progress on my first ever quilt!

Working in a fabric shop where a lot of the customers are quilters I thought I better have a crack at a quilt myself. I didn't want to just make one for the sake of it either I wanted to make one for a purpose and wait for the perfect fabric.

A couple of weeks ago now some lovely charm packs got delivered to the shop. I knew this was the fabric for my first quilt when I saw it. The fabric is from Moda and the collection is poetry. The prints in this remind me a bit of Cath kinston but more traditional and softer.

The lovely People I work with helped me pick out the quilt pattern I was going to use. They chose a lovely one called Parade. These patter cards are brilliant they show you a picture of the finished quilt on the front and then what fabrics you need on the back and the instructions. This particular pattern required 5 inch squares which is why we chose it as my charm pack was perfect for it I also needed a plain border fabric I chose a pink fabric to contrast which was a makower Linea fabric.

This is how far I have got so far, there is an option to add another border around the edge to make it bigger which is what I am going to do I am going to use a patterned fabric, possibly a spotty fabric, nothing that will distract away from the rest of the quilt.

I also need to choose my backing fabric and binding fabric. I am thinking of a white fabric for the backing and picking out the lovely blue colour in my quilt for my binding.

The finished size of my quilt will be 49" by 63" not big enough to be a bed quilt but I am going to put it on the bottom of my quilt as a bed runner.

I will keep you posted on how I get on with the rest of my quilt.

Another Debbie Shore satchel bag

So last week I decided to make another Debbie Shore satchel bag, and i must say the more you make these the easier they are!

I made this particular one in a cotton canvas I bought a metre of each and paid around £6 a metre and this bag doesn't take a lot of fabric at all so i could probably make a couple more bags from this.

I used the Bolsal foam again as the wadding for the front and back of the bag, i love this stuff its more expensive at about 8 per half metre but this bag only takes a bit i've made about three of these bags out of that and a makeup bag so it is quite cost effective but that obviously depends on what bag you make and how big it is.

Here are some photos of the bag I made. I love the colours of this one it is muted but still has that bit of colour. I didn't use an adjustable strap for this one as I didn't have a slider available and couldn't wait to make it.

More fabric shopping

Today me and my mum went fabric shopping at oh sew sweet shop again but this time at their Wombwell shop.

I went knowing exactly what I wanted to make so that I knew how much fabric was needed.

I am wanting to have a go at making the sew together bags that seem to be very popular within the sewing world.

My first choice was the beautiful metalic butterfly fabric in the first picture, this is for the outer of the bag,  I then chose three contrasting colours in a print but as you can see they are all the same print.

I then didn't know what to choose for another sew together bag as I was spoiled for choice but as I was at the cutting table I saw some fabric that they had just got in and they where cutting them into fat quarters. The fabric is by Lewis and Irene and as you can see in the second and third picture they have a Chinese new year theme to them which I thought was different and I adore the fabric with the pandas on.

Lastly, I needed interfacing and was shown a new interfacing that has diagonal quilting lines on as a guide for quilting so I thought I could quilt the outer of my bags !

So that was all I bought today but I know I will be going back for more fabric very soon. Keep popping back to my blog as I will most deffinatly be blogging about my sew together bags.

Fabric shopping

On Tuesday night I did a bit of fabric shopping at oh sew sweet shop in Mapplewell I went in for some fat quarters with no projects in mind but so I had some fabric in when I had a project to make. I got 6 fat quarters and some fabric for a bag I decided to make so that's what the linen is for and the green spot is going to be my lining.

I will be blogging about what I make with these fabrics so you can see them transformed into projects.

Fabric Shopping At oh sew sweet shop

Today I visited the new oh sew sweet shop in Wombwell which they have also made into a coffee shop.

This is just a quick post to show what I've bought for my next projects.

The first two fabrics I bought half a metre each of I'm not sure what I'm going to make yet but I just loved the bright pink and yellow colours.

The next two are these lovely linen fabrics that I have got for a bag class I am going to at oh sew sweet shop on the 28th June I'm really excited and love the fabrics I have choose. I wanted denim blue colours so I could use the bag when I wear my jeans. The heat fabric is my main fabric and the dotty is going to be my contrast. I will definitely show you how I got on and reveal the finished bag.

Told you this would be a quick post but I am going to be doing another one showing some of what I've been making recently.

Starting to Make Tilda Dolls - What i've Bought

Hi, After saying I was going to blog regular after my last post I haven't but this time i'm determined.

Today I am going to show you the things that I have bought to start making Tilda dolls or Tilda style dolls.  I have almost finished making my first one and I am really pleased with the outcome and will share with you all when It's done.

Firstly, the fabric which I have bought from Oh sew sweet shop in mapplewell, Barnsley.

 The main fabric which will be used for the dolls is linen, this is a reallygood quality linen and so easy to work with and I have used this particular linen on my bags too.

I then chose the material that would be used for the clothing. I chose a main fabric then chose a contrast fabric to go with it and as you can see in the photo I have 3 sets. I really love the prints of these fabrics and even though they aren't Tilda materials they are very much Tilda inspired.

I then bought some freezer paper and even though this is not an essential part of sewing Tilda dolls it is very helpfull, it allows you to trace your patterns and then you can iron the freezer paper onto your fabric so you dont have to use pins. This is also from Oh sew sweet shop and it was £6.75 for about 13 meteres and once you trace your patterns they can be used around 4-5 times.

Last but not least and probably a really important part is the books with the patterns in. The first one is Tilda's spring ideas, this was given to me I was then inspired after looking at that to go buy another one, I chose Tilda studio as it seemed to be one of the bigger Tilda books. The good things about Tilda books is that it doesnt just have patterns for the dolls but has patterns for bgas, cushions, homewares and much more. I think I will be deffinatly ordering more books, there are quite a few to collect.
